An Example of Resistance Against Development in an Earthquake Gathering Area: Old Moda Market, New Moda Garden
The number of earthquake gathering areas is steadily decreasing, and as a result of new regulations, they are now designated as areas where schoolyards and parks are located. Kadıköy Municipality, which has designated all of its parks as earthquake gathering areas, is one of the districts with the most green space in Istanbul. In this district, where urban voids that had not previously functioned as parks have long since been filled, one such void has been converted into an earthquake gathering area: the Old Moda Permanent Market, also known as Moda Bostanı, located in the Caferağa neighborhood.
The article discusses this 3,800-square-meter urban void, defined on the map but undefined in everyday life, located between Moda Bostanı Street and Şair Nefi Street.
The article was published on beyond.istanbul's Spatial Justice and Earthquake issue, edited by Eray Çaylı. You can read the article here.
